How To Access System Files On iPhone, iPod, or iPad Using SSH

SSH allows you to access data between two networked devices. You can use SSH to read, write, edit, and repair files or even install apps on your iOS device.

In order to access your iOS device with your Mac or PC, your iPhone, iPod, or iPad must be jailbroken. Once jailbroken, you can follow the following guide.

NOTE: This guide assumes that your iOS device is jailbroken. In case if your iOS device is not jailbroken then head over to this page to jailbreak it.

Step 1: Open “Cydia” on your device.

Step 2: Go to “Search” tab and then search for “OpenSSH”.

Step 3: Now install “OpenSSH” and then reboot your device.

Step 4: Connect your device with your computer.

Step 5: Download and install an FTP client such as “Cyberduck” or Filezilla for Windows or Mac.

Step 6: Open the FTP program and enter following details:

  • Server/Host: The IP address of your device (you can find it by going to “Settings” -> “WiFi”, and then click the blue arrow next to wireless network)
  • Username: root
  • Password: alpine
  • Protocol: SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol)

Step 7: Once you have entered the above details then click on “Connect”.

You are done and should be able to browse the system files on your device!
