Adobe Stops Flash Development For Mobile Devices

Adobe stops mobile Flash development

The ability to run Flash has always been a selling point for Android and other devices especially since Apple’s iOS devices are anti-Flash. Flash had originally been scheduled to come to the Windows phones in the near future too, but Adobe has announced that it is stopping development of its Flash Player for mobile browsers.

Adobe will continue supporting current Android and Blackberry implementations of Flash but have decided to focus on developing HTML5 along with apps.

Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer adapt Flash Player for mobile devices to new browser, OS version or device configurations. Some of our source code licensees may opt to continue working on and releasing their own implementations. We will continue to support the current Android and PlayBook configurations with critical bug fixes and security updates.

Along with this announcement Adobe also said that they would be laying off 750 employees for restructuring. Whether this is part of the Flash department changing or not is yet to be known.
