Untethered iPhone 4 iOS 5.1 Jailbreak Achieved

For the jailbreak community, yesterday had good news from Pod2G on Twitter where he has an untethered iOS 5.1 jailbreak running on an iPhone 4.

For those new to the jailbreak scene, a tethered jailbreak requires you to connect your iOS device to a computer and run a tool every time you reboot your phone or it dies. An untethered jailbreak doesn’t have this restriction and you can reboot your phone freely and maintain all usability.

Even though this news is great, there is still a good amount of work yet to be done because the iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and the new iPad use newer chips than the iPhone 4.

i0n1c, another known member in the jailbreak community demoed the new iPad already jailbroken on iOS 5.1 but for some reason decided not to release it. While getting many harsh tweets from other users, Pod2G stated the following:

Please people, don’t insult @i0n1c, he’s a great guy, and did a lot for the jb community. He has his reasons to not release 5.1 jb.
